The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) is sponsored and organized under the auspices of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) (See ARES).  The Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) (See RACES) is sponsored by the Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management (YCOEM).  In Yavapai County, ARES and RACES are combined into a single organization in order to provide the most flexibility when dealing with an emergency situation.  As ARES, we participate in emergency situations prior to the official declaration of an emergency and when the emergency is declared, we become RACES.

In order to participate with ARES/RACES, you must pass some online courses from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) (See Basic Training).  These requirements come directly from the Department of Homeland Security, through the YCOEM.  Please note that the courses required for ARES level certification should be viewed as a stepping stone to the RACES 1 and 2 levels.  Almost all emergency events are very quickly declared as official emergencies and if ARES is your certification level, you will not be able to participate past the declaration.

As part of the application process, you may be subject to a background check through YCOEM.

When your membership is accepted, we will add you to our mailing list for newsletters and notifications of training and other events.  When you have submitted documentation verifying completion of the courses listed in Basic Training, you will be issued a badge which will allow you to participate in actual incidents

There is more information on how Yavapai County ARES/RACES is organized on other pages on this web site (See Organization).  If you have further questions about ARES/RACES, please contact the District Emergency Coordinator, Bud Semon, N7CW.
